May is National Caregiver Month
During National Caregiver Month, we acknowledge and celebrate the 8+ million caregivers across Canada who support their family members and friends.
While half of Canadians will provide care at some point in their lives, many people don’t recognize themselves as caregivers. Instead, they identify simply as daughters, husbands, children or neighbours who are supporting a person they love.
Providing care is a natural part of being in a relationship and many people don’t know about the resources that exist to help them through their journey.
Sound familiar? This year, we are bringing attention to caregiving for those who don’t identify as such during National Caregiver Month.
You are a caregiver if you:
- Coordinate appointments for a family member or friend
- Bring meals to someone you know who may not be able to provide for themselves
- Provide emotional support to someone with a medical condition
- Provide transportation to medical appointments or errands
- Help with tasks of daily living such as bathing, dressing
- And more
While caregiving in Canada can be challenging and take a toll on the physical and mental health of those who provide care, there are resources available across Canada to support your care journey.
