What is Neglect?
The failure to meet the older person’s needs for physical and mental well-being, and can include abandonment.
- Active (intentional) neglect: deliberate withholding of care or basic necessities of life (medications or mobility assistance).
- Passive (unintentional) neglect: the failure to provide proper care, poor hygiene or unsafe living conditions, due to lack of knowledge, experience /ability or not being aware of local resources/supports.
Signs include:
- Poor hygiene or unmet basic care needs
- Malnutrition, dehydration, or untreated medical issues
- Unsafe or unsanitary living conditions
Examples :
- Abandonment/denial of a senior’s basic rights
- Withholding care or denying access to necessary services (home care, nursing) or medical attention
- Leaving a person in an unsafe environment
- Improper use of medication (over/under medicating)
